Doctor gives stroke survivors new shot at mobility, independence

Jewish World Review ^ | March 6, 2013 | Nicole Brochu

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A single injection, then a five-minute wait.
That's all it took for hundreds of stroke and traumatic brain injury patients nationwide to reverse years of debilitation. Now they're walking more steadily, reading more easily, concentrating better, speaking more clearly and regaining use of once-rigid limbs — long after giving up hope that their bodies would ever respond.
The 25-milligram shot at renewed independence is the brainchild of Boca Raton, Fla., physician Dr. Edward Tobinick. His patented method for delivering the anti-inflammatory medicine, etanercept, to the brain is getting praise around the world as a "radical breakthrough" in the treatment of chronic neurological dysfunction.
"It's magic," said Dr. Rene Alfaro, an ophthalmologist from Mexico, of the single-dose injection that almost instantly restored much of his wife's movement and cognition more than a year after an aneurysm and subsequent stroke incapacitated her left side. "It's like a click."
Within minutes of receiving the injection on Monday, Anna Alfaro walked without a cane, got up from a chair more easily and regained sensation in her left arm. Hours later, with some of her left eye vision returned, she could see the phone clearly enough to dial a number for the first time since her illness.
Her response is not unique.
In a peer-reviewed study in the Adis medical journal,
"CNS Drugs," Tobinick's Institute of Neurological Recovery gave etanercept injections from November 2010 to July 2012 to 617 stroke patients and 12 patients who had suffered a traumatic brain injury, or TBI....

Attorney General Eric Holder is Criminally Dangerous!

http://cfif.org/ ^ | March 5th, 2013 | by Quin Hillyer

With the news today that Eric Holder has told Kentucky’s U.S. Sen. Rand Paul that President Obama “has the power to authorize lethal force, such as a drone strike, against a U.S. citizen on U.S. soil, and without trial,” it is now apparent that this man is criminally out of control, and a menace to society. This chilling, outrageous, tyrannical assertion of power comes on top of a stunning assertion that he himself is entirely above the law giving Congress the power to oversee federal agencies and to enforce said power — which derives directly from the Constitution — via the ability to hold scofflaws officially in contempt. Here’s what he said about the members of an elected, co-equal branch of government, when they held him in contempt: “ I have to tell you that for me to really be affected by what happened, I’d have to have respect for the people who voted in that way,” Holder told ABC News. “And I didn’t, so it didn’t have that huge an impact on me.” Note that the contempt vote against Holder was not just a partisan exercise: Seventeen Democrats also voted to hold him in contempt, for his refusal to share information (and for prevaricating) about the murderous “Fast and Furious” gun-running scandal. This is lawlessness upon lawlessness upon lawlessness — from a thoroughly mendacious man who already was running a lawless department. The list of Holder’s outrages through the years is so long as to defy belief… but today’s letter to Rand Paul is by far the most frightening, most despicable chapter in Holder’s reign of proto-criminality.

FED SURVEY: Businesses Say They're Hiring Less And Laying Off Workers Because Of Obamacare!

Business Insider ^ | 03/06/2013 | Matthew Boesler

The Federal Reserve's latest Beige Book report, which provides anecdotal data on economic conditions around the United States, paints a mixed picture.

One of the things that came up a few times in the report was the Affordable Care Act.

In the release, the Fed noted: "Many District contacts commented on the expired payroll tax holiday and the Affordable Care Act as having restrained sales growth...Employers in several Districts cited the unknown effects of the Affordable Care Act as reasons for planned layoffs and reluctance to hire more staff."

Below is an excerpt from the Richmond Fed's section of the Beige Book:
"Labor market activity was little changed since our last report. Hiring remained flat across most sectors, although there were some exceptions. Employers across the District continued to cite the Affordable Care Act and its unknown impacts as reasons for planned layoffs and reluctance to hire more staff."
Here is another excerpt from the Dallas Fed's section:
"Reports from staffing firms were mixed. One contact noted sharp declines in demand for services across the board, while another reported stellar demand that broke direct-hiring records. Outlooks were cautious. Some contacts noted concern that client companies are hiring the absolute minimum to get by due to uncertainty about the Affordable Care Act."
On the other hand, it's good news for some health care businesses, according to the San Francisco Fed's section of the Beige Book:

Chief White House Calligrapher Gets Paid $96,725 Per Year!

The Weekly Standard ^ | Mar 6, 2013 | Daniel Halper

With the White House closing its doors to public tour groups in order to save money for the sequester, it's worth remembering some of the other costs the White House incurs annually.

Like the "Chief Calligrapher," Patricia A. Blair, who has an annual salary of $96,725, and her two deputies, Debra S. Brown, who gets paid $85,953 per year, and Richard T. Muffler, who gets paid $94,372 every year.

In all, the White House appears to employ 3 calligraphers for a yearly total of $277,050.

Despite sequestration, there's been no announcement of the White House scaling back on calligraphers!

The Malicious President Tries to Make America Pay

Townhall.com ^ | March 6, 2013 | Ben Shapiro

For years, conservatives have been split on whether President Barack Obama is incompetent or whether he is malicious. Mitt Romney ably made the argument for incompetence during the 2012 election cycle, when he stated that President Obama was. Romney's view symbolized the majority view on the issue.

Until now.

With the advent of sequestration, it is now clear that President Obama is willing to throw Americans under the bus in pursuit of his vision of a transformed America. He is more than content to break eggs to make his utopian omelet. That uncomfortable reality became clear during the sequestration debate when Obama showed zero predilection for actual negotiation, and instead decided to roam the countryside babbling about the End Times should the 2.4 percent reduction to future spending he originally proposed take place.
He framed himself with first responders, teachers and miscellaneous members of the Village People in order to promote the notion that budget cuts strike where it hurts. He trotted out his Department of Homeland Security to proclaim that budget cuts would mean freeing illegal immigrants. He trotted out his Secretary of Education to claim that teachers were already receiving pink slips.
Obama knew that his tactics would not achieve his supposed goal -- more targeted spending cuts rather than the heavy-handed broad-swath cuts automatically taking place under sequestration. But he knew that his tactics could help him achieve his real goal: casting all spending as vital, and all cuts as devastating.
With the implementation of sequestration, however, Obama now has a problem: The cuts will not devastate the American economy. In fact, they would help the economy if we pared away waste in government.
So now Obama has a choice: He can either help the economy and undercut his larger case for spending addiction, or he can cut where it hurts most.
He has chosen to cut where it hurts most. He hasn't chosen to cut the Transportation Security Administration's $50 million uniform makeover. He hasn't chosen to cut grants to develop robotic squirrels for use in research. He's reportedly chosen to cut Medicare funding, military pay, funding for air security, Navy patrols and border patrol agents. The sequestration cuts Obama will implement will hit the poor especially hard. These are the deeds of a man committed to making the American people pay for the sin of fiscal responsibility.
But will Americans buy it? Obama has the press on his side, a compliant media dedicated to painting him as a wronged leader desperately trying to save American jobs in the face of reckless Republican cuts. But Obama invented the sequester. Increasingly, Americans are realizing that the president they have on their hands is more than incompetent. He is ideologically driven to do harm to them, even when he could avoid doing so.

Obamacare’s Predictable Problems: Reality isn’t playing out according to the media script

National Review ^ | 03/06/2013 | Jonah Goldberg

‘What we’ve learned through the course of this program is that this is really not a sensible way for the health-care system to be run.”
That was Gary Cohen, director of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight. He was talking about the apparently surprising need to halt enrollments in a program designed as a temporary bridge for people with pre-existing conditions who couldn’t wait to be covered by the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) when it fully kicks in next year. The program was allocated $5 billion, but some estimate that it would take $40 billion to fund the effort.
Such surprises are becoming routine. The New York Times has reported that many small and midsize firms may be opting out of Obamacare entirely. “The new health-care law created powerful incentives for smaller employers to self-insure,” Deborah J. Chollet of Mathematica Policy Research told the paper. “This trend could destabilize small-group insurance markets and erode protections provided by the Affordable Care Act.”
It turns out that Obamacare actually makes self-insurance less of a gamble because you can always throw workers on public exchanges without penalty. Naturally, the administration’s response is to look for ways to tighten the ratchet and make self-insurance harder. It’s a typical response. The shortcomings of a wildly ambitious law only justify more regulatory strong-arming.
As Yuval Levin of the Ethics and Public Policy Center notes, the Times never paused to ask why it’s okay that “a design flaw in the law somehow empowers” regulators to punish private employers. But this is typical of so much press coverage of Obamacare; it’s a given that it is the government’s job to make sure the law is seen as successful, no matter what.
Although it’s true that we collectively spent a lot of time shouting about Obamacare, we spent precious little time actually debating it. Most of the media covered the discussion as if it were a spectator sport, with the Democrats the hometown favorite. And much of the remainder seemed to assume that health-care reporting amounted to explaining why Obamacare was a good idea. The facade of objectivity was often maintained by citing carefully crafted CBO projections that reflected political assumptions. Garbage in, garbage out.
Reality is teaching the propeller-heads a lesson. Despite President Obama’s promise that his plan would not add “one dime” to the deficit, the Government Accountability Office announced last week that it would more likely add 62,000,000,000,000 dimes (or $6.2 trillion) over 75 years.
Obama also promised that “if you like your health-care plan, you can keep your health-care plan.” Estimates for how many Americans will lose their existing plans vary. The CBO says 5 million to 20 million. The consulting firm McKinsey & Co. says about 30 percent of employers will push workers onto the public system.
Even the AFL-CIO and the Teamsters have started to freak out over the gold-plated benefits many of their members will lose, thanks to the guy they helped reelect.
Another irony: While the president rode to reelection hyping a mythical GOP “war on women,” incentives to drop spouses from employee coverage under his plan will only increase, a particular concern for mothers with small kids. The good news is that if they keep their coverage, it will cover birth-control pills.
Also, while Taco Bell and Wendy’s are demoting many full-time workers to part-time work, some of Obama’s core constituencies — universities and state governments — are cutting hours too. For instance, Stark State College in Ohio sent a letter to faculty saying that “to avoid penalties under the Affordable Care Act . . . employees with part-time or adjunct status will not be assigned more than an average of 29 hours per week.”
Virtually all of these problems and many others were predicted by conservatives, but the media rolled their collective eyes in response. The Iraq War justifiably led to a lot of media soul-searching about how journalists were too credulous of the Bush administration’s arguments. A similar discussion about how we got stuck in the Obamacare quagmire seems long overdue.

Socialized Medicine Even Kills Socialists (Would Hugh Chavez have fared better in America?)

American Thinker ^ | 03/06/2013 | Jeannie DeAngelis

The President of Venezuela's dependence on Cuban healthcare obviously failed him, because Hugo Chávez is dead.

In a July 16, 2011 New York Times article entitled "Chávez Puts His Trust in Castro for Care," Michael Shifter, president of the Inter-American Dialogue in Washington, was quoted as saying "For Chávez, questions of trust, political loyalty and control trump all other considerations. Fidel is one of the few people in which Chávez has utter faith and trust. He is prepared to entrust his health to Fidel, even if he could get better treatment elsewhere."

Notwithstanding Chávez's "utter faith and trust" in Fidel Castro and the Cuban National Health System, the Venezuelan dictator has now officially assumed room temperature. America should pay heed, because if Hugo could speak from the grave it's likely he'd say that caution should be exercised before placing all your healthcare eggs in the wrong basket.

For political reasons and in order to maintain the type of secrecy propagandists require in order to retain power, Chávez chose La Habana's Centro de Investigaciones Médico Quirúrgicas (CIMEQ) and its incompetent doctors to treat his cancer. The hard truth is that according to some, the cancer that killed Chávez, had it been diagnosed correctly, was treatable.

The curious thing about all this is that Michael Moore's Cuba wasn't Chávez's only choice for healthcare. It is alleged that at a summit in Caracas, Brazil, President Dilma Rousseff told colleagues that Chávez would die as a "result of his excessive paranoia rather than as a consequence of his serious - yet treatable - cancer."

Rousseff should know; she herself was successfully treated for lymphatic cancer at the Sirio-Libanese Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Hollywood bids a fond farewell to Hugo Chavez [Michael Moore, Oliver Stone, Roseanne Bar,Sean Penn]

Politico ^

Hollywood bids a fond farewell to Hugo Chavez By: Patrick Gavin March 6, 2013 07:05 AM EST
As the legacy of Hugo Chavez gets debated in the wake of his passing, filmmakers Michael Moore and Oliver Stone took to Twitter to praise the late Venezuelan president.
“You won’t hear much nice about him in the US media in the next few days. So, I thought I’d say a couple things to provide some balance” wrote Moore.
“Hugo Chavez declared the oil belonged 2 the ppl. He used the oil $ 2 eliminate 75% of extreme poverty, provide free health & education 4 all.” “That made him dangerous. US approved of a coup to overthrow him even though he was a democratically-elected President.” “54 countries around the world allowed the US to detain(& torture) suspects. Latin America, thanks 2 Chavez, was the only place that said no.”
Moore shared a picture of him meeting with Chavez in 2009 at the Venice Film Fest.
“We spoke for over an hour. He said he was happy 2 finally meet someone Bush hated more than him.”
Oliver Stone said, “I mourn a great hero to the majority of his people and those who struggle throughout the world for a place.” “Hated by the entrenched classes, Hugo Chavez will live forever in history. My friend, rest finally in a peace long earned.”
Roseanne Barr also tweeted out her mourning over Chavez, saying, “Ruling Classes hated Hugo Chavez. RIP.” Recording artist M.I.A said the same .
Sean Penn said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter that “the people of the United States lost a friend it never knew it had. And poor people around the world lost a champion.

Homeland Security Drones Designed to Identify Civilians Carrying Guns

Breitbart ^ | 3-5-13 | Wynton Hall

Recently uncovered government documents reveal that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) unmanned Predator B drone fleet has been customize designed to identify civilians carrying guns and track cell phone signals.
"I am very concerned that this technology will be used against law-abiding American firearms owners," said founder and executive vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation Alan Gottlieb. “This could violate Fourth Amendment rights as well as Second Amendment rights."
The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) obtained a partially redacted copy of Homeland Security’s drone requirements through a Freedom of Information Act request; CNET uncovered an unredacted copy.
Homeland Security design requirements specify that its Predator B drones “shall be capable of identifying a standing human being at night as likely armed or not” and must be equipped with “interception” systems capable of reading cell phone signals.

Don’t Cry for Hugo!

NRO ^ | 03/06/13 | John Fund

The Left has already started the whitewashing of Hugo Chávez’s record, and I have no doubt that within days his image will adorn T-shirts the way the thuggish Che Guevara does.

Within minutes of the announcement of the strongman’s death, Ken Livingstone, London’s former mayor, tweeted the following:

K: Hugo Chavez showed there is an alternative to neo-liberalism and colonialism in Venezuela and worldwide. He was a friend & comrade #RIP
— Ken Livingstone (@ken4london) March 5, 2013

As the London Times dryly noted: “There is a desperation on the Left for heroes who can reverse what seems like half a century of ideological defeat.”

Palin may have something on why Obama's buying up so much ammo: She was right on "death panels"!

The Beaufort Observer ^ | March 5, 2013 | The Editors

Once again we think, Sarah Palin has hit the nail on the head. The fact is the Federal Government has in recent months stockpiled an enormous amount of ammunition. Much more than has ever been used in the past and much more than could ever be conceivably used in ordinary circumstances. So why are they doing it?
Many people, including the Zombie Obama supporters just ignore the question. Congress ignores it and the Obama Administration refuses to explain their actions.
But it goes without saying that there is a reason. And we just think Palin has as good an explanation as anyone we've heard. She writes, on her Facebook page that she believes that the government is preparing for expected civil unrest when the economy collapses. We agree.
But we think it is even worse that the government preparing for the worst. We have a gnawing suspicion that Obama and his top minions are simply preparing to survive what they plan on causing. There are too many unexplainable actions by the Obama Administration to weaken America and destroy the essence of what has made this country great. We think Obama despises American exceptionalism and he has been determined for years to "cut America down to size."
Moreover, we think there are millions of people in this country who have no clue about what Obama is doing to America. They are too self-absorbed to care. But Obama knows that when the house of cards collapses they will react and it will not likely be to congratulate him. So he needs protection. That is why he has ordered the stockpiling of so much ammunition.

DHS plans to release 5,000 illegal immigrants due to sequestration (big LIE)

The Washington Examiner ^ | March 5, 2013 | Joel Gehrke

House investigators learned Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials developed plans to release about 5,000 illegal immigrant detainees, although Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has denied responsibility for the decision.
“An internal document obtained by the House Judiciary Committee shows that Administration officials at ICE prepared cold calculations to release thousands of criminal aliens onto the streets and did not demonstrate any consideration of the impact this decision would have on the safety of Americans,” committee chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., announced.
The ICE document contains a table that proposes “reduc[ing] invoiced daily population by 1,000 weekly.” Between February 22 and March 31st, this plan would drop the number of detainees from 30,748 to 25,748.
“The decision to release detained aliens undermines the Department of Homeland Security’s mission to keep our homeland secure and instead makes our communities less safe and more vulnerable to crime,” Goodlatte said. “[R]egardless of sequestration, DHS actually has plenty of funding to pay for the detention of criminal aliens. Unfortunately, it seems Administration officials are more interested in using sequestration to promote their political agenda than as an opportunity to get our nation’s fiscal house in order.”
Napolitano said that it wasn’t her decision, even though ICE is part of DHS....

In Texas everything is big? How about paying $10,000 for four years of college?

Jewish World Review ^ | March 6, 2013 | Margaret Price

How 10 universities in the Lone Star state do it.

Recently, Alex Stenner, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin — Green Bay, saved hundreds of dollars on tuition and hours spent in class. He signed up for a free online introduction to psychology course offered by Education Portal, of Mountain View, Calif.; crammed his studying into two weeks over the Christmas holidays; and then took the College Board's College Level Examination Program (CLEP).

After he passed that exam, his university awarded him academic credit for the psychology course. That meant he'd obtained the course credits for only $90 — the cost of taking the CLEP — versus "having to pay $750 [to] $900 to take the course from the university," says Mr. Stenner.

He now hopes "to be able to take up to four more courses this way."

As college costs mount, Americans are looking for creative ways to cut tuition bills. Two recent initiatives are getting lots of attention. One is the advent of massive open online courses (MOOCs), which are free courses open to anyone. The second is the debut in Texas of the $10,000 tuition plan....
