After a night of violent protests canceled an appearance by alt-right firebrand Milo Yiannopoulos, UC Berkeley woke up Thursday morning to a threat from President Donald Trump: Fail to protect free speech at the peril of federal funds.
The president delivered his ultimatum on Twitter at 3:13 a.m. Pacific time: “If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view — NO FEDERAL FUNDS?”
The UC system receives more than $2 billion in federal research funding and another $1.6 billion in federal aid for students, according to its 2015-16 budget summary. UC officials were unavailable early Thursday to comment.
