The Mandela funeral proved beyond all doubt Michelle Obama is currently the most powerful person in the world

They say "happy wife happy life." While I don't deny the overriding truth to that, I always thought it was sort of obnoxious because it implies that the husbands happiness in a marriage is optional.
Then there are times where the husband is indeed happy, and with "Selfiegate" that's precisely the problem...

Dems want briefing on Issa docs - “immediate classified briefing” on Obamacare [fear leaks]

The Hill ^ | December 16, 2013 | Jonathan Easley

The White House and senior congressional Democrats on Monday said congressional leaders should seek an “immediate classified briefing” on ObamaCare documents subpoenaed by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.).
The Democrats argue in a letter to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) that the two leaders should intervene in Issa’s investigation.
They also accuse Issa of being reckless with sensitive information that ObamaCare contractors handed to him last week under the threat of a subpoena.
“We do not believe these sensitive documents should have been provided to the Committee without adequate protocols to safeguard their contents,” the Democrats wrote in their letter “But now that they have, we have an obligation to understand the harm that would be caused if these documents were disclosed.”
“It is reckless in the extreme for Chairman Issa or any member to possess these documents without a full understanding of the extremely sensitive information they contain and the widespread damage that could be caused if they got into the wrong hands,” they added.
The letter was signed by Reps. Elijah Cummings (Md.), Henry Waxman (Ca.), Adam Smith (Wa.), Bennie Thompson (Miss.), Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.), George Miller (Ca.), and Sander Levin (Mich.). They are the top Democrats on seven separate committees.
The Democrats say they’re seeking leadership intervention because Issa has refused a personal briefing from Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and senior cybersecurity officials “on the security risks of disclosing these documents.”
In a separate letter to Boehner and Pelosi, the White House legal counsel warns the documents would, if disclosed, “provide information to potential hackers that increases the risk they could penetrate HealthCare.gov.”
The administration has allowed committee staffers to review the reports in a secure room but cited security concerns in refusing to turn over the physical copies, provoking Issa to subpoena the documents from the contractors directly.
“The Committee Chairman did not respond to any of HHS’s proposals, nor did he make any reciprocal effort to find an alternative accommodation,” the White House letter says.
“Rather, the Committee Chairman insisted on physical production of the documents without agreeing to put in place any safeguards to ensure their confidentiality.”
Issa announced Friday that two ObamaCare contractors would comply with the subpoenas he issued, despite efforts by the Obama administration and some Democrats to keep the documents out of his hands.
The Obama administration and Democrats have said Issa can’t be trusted with the documents because he’s displayed a “reckless pattern” of leaking confidential information in a way that promotes “inaccurate” media coverage.
After consulting with its legal counsel, MITRE Corp., a contractor working to assess security issues with the ObamaCare website, determined that it “has no alternative but to comply with the terms of a Congressional subpoena absent some form of judicial intervention.”
In a letter to Issa, MITRE said the subpoena put it in a “difficult position” because it’s concerned about the security of the sensitive information it would be required to hand over, and because the documents technically belong to the government agency tasked with implementing ObamaCare, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
The administration said it’s concerned about the MITRE documents leaking because they “include software code and other technical information that is highly sensitive” and could give hackers “a roadmap to compromise the security of the website and the personal information of American citizens.”
Issa said he would make sure that didn’t happen.
“In reviewing the documents lawfully provided by MITRE, we intend to consult carefully with non-conflicted experts to ensure no information is released that could further jeopardize the website’s security,” Issa said on Friday.

Jay Carney: We’re not living up to our transparency promises? It’s the Internet’s fault !

By Doug Powers  •  December 13, 2013 11:47 AM

According to Jay Carney at yesterday’s press conference, part of the lack of transparency in the Obama administration that the press corps is complaining about has been caused by the Internet. Thanks a lot, Al Gore!
Video via Katie Pavlich at Townhall, who notes the best line from a reporter: “Anyone here can tell you there’s less access here than under the Bush administration.” Ouch!

Nice try, Jay, but after watching the rollout of HealthCare.gov it’s clear that nobody in the administration knows anything about how the Internet works.
As for the WH press corps, some of them are still nursing herniated discs from all the time they spent carrying Barack Obama into office. The fact that they’re now revolting over being locked out of the party they ushered him to is somewhat amusing.

Millennials Finally Turn Against Obama, Want Recal

Townhall.com ^ | December 16, 2013 | Rachel Alexander

A majority of 18-to-24-year-olds now say they would recall Obama as president if they could. It is finally happening; young people who overwhelmingly supported Obama are now turning away from him in droves. The hope and change he promised never materialized, instead replaced with deteriorating conditions.
A new poll from Harvard University’s Institute of Politics found that Millennial approval of Obama has dipped to the lowest ever, at 41 percent. Their dissatisfaction with Obama now mirrors the rest of the country. Similarly, 56 percent of Americans aged 18 to 29 disapprove of Obamacare, compared to only 39 percent who support it. The younger Millennials are becoming increasingly less Democratic. Of those age 18 to 24, 31 percent identify as Democrats and 25 percent as Republicans.
This is occurring in part because the entry level jobs they are qualified for are drying up and turning into free internships. Paid internships are becoming a rarity. Millennials are realizing the Occupy Wall Street movement’s demands only succeeded in making things worse for them. Fast food workers striking for higher wages is hurting, not helping them. Instead of having a good shot at what used to be plentiful fast-food jobs, young people are finding themselves replaced by fast-food ordering kiosks.
Retail jobs aren’t faring much better. Instead of a fairly set, dependable schedule, young people are discovering they need to compete for hours each week in a bidding system online. There are fewer customer service jobs available than there were 20 years ago, because so many corporations have outsourced those positions to countries like India in order to avoid punishing labor laws forced upon them within the U.S. by unions. Jobs with 40 hours a week and benefits are becoming harder to find, as employers increasingly rely upon part-time workers in order to avoid providing health insurance with its onerous, unaffordable requirements under Obamacare.
The cost of higher education continues to escalate, with no end in sight. College students are graduating with over $100,000 in student loans, yet are lucky if they can find a full-time minimum wage job upon graduating.
Finally, the reality of Obamacare is setting in. Young people thought they would have free health insurance. In reality, the true cost of healthcare through the Obamacare exchanges is coming out and it is much more than what they would pay for in the private sector. Instead of paying $4/mth for birth control at Walmart through the private sector, Sandra Fluke has ensured that government intervention in the area of birth control will escalate everyone’s overall healthcare premiums and costs.
Obamacare is designed so that young, healthy people pay more for healthcare in order to subsidize older, less healthy people. The fewer young people who enroll, the higher the costs of Obamacare. Obamacare needs 40 percent of those who sign up to be under 35, but only 29 percent of uninsured 18-to-29-year-olds say they intend to enroll.
The older generations are better suited to buy into Obama’s false promises of hope and change, because there is still a little money left to be borrowed to pass along to them through Social Security, and they have seniority at their existing union jobs. Millennials aren’t benefiting from any of this. The best they get from this administration is staying on their parents’ health insurance a few extra years - embarrassing at best.
As young people continue to struggle five years into Obama’s presidency, they are becoming resentful of his endless pricey jaunts around the world with his wife and daughters, visiting the most exotic locations and meeting celebrities galore. While Michelle Obama wears the finest designer clothing, Millennials are still living in their parents’ basements well into their 20’s, lucky to even own a used car.
Another factor contributing to Millennial dissatisfaction is the vast domestic surveillance state imposed by this administration. What was once considered a Republican area - national security - has now been taken to new lengths by the left under Obama. Millennials are wired more than previous generations, so spying on their wireless phones, email and social media activity disproportionately affects them. It is no coincidence that the individual who leaked information about the NSA’s domestic surveillance program, Edward Snowden, Is only 30.
In 2008, 66 percent of young people voted for Obama, which decreased to 60 percent in 2012. Without the youth vote, Obama would not have won reelection. This bodes well for Republicans in 2016. The Democrats have no money left to promise young people.
What has Obama done for young people? Government-controlled birth control which increased their healthcare costs, and some tinkering with student loans, which has had no more effect on rising education debt than throwing a thimbleful of water on a fire. Millennials are stuck paying for broke entitlement programs the Democrats promised to older generations in order to buy the latter’s vote. The party is over, and young people are tired of picking up the tab.

Confidential Obamacare Navigator training manual uploaded online!

Capitol City Proj ^ | December 16, 2013 | Joe Schoffstall

Tammy Duffy, a radiation health physicist from New Jersey, was talking with Obamacare Navigators one day and asked a question regarding people who are self-employed, in which they could not provide an answer. She then asked for a copy of the manual, which they would not give her since it’s not meant to be available to the public.
“I asked the nice ladies for a copy and they said I could not have it because it was a government document not for the public. So I thought maybe there is an outline or shorter version that is for the public. I went to Google and typed in ‘healthcare insurance marketplace Navigator SOP,” Duffy said.
Sure enough, a Google search of “Healthcare insurance marketplace Navigator SOP” yields a link back to the “Health Insurance Marketplace Navigator Standard Operating Procedures Manual.” The manual is labeled as “restricted distribution” by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and threatens prosecution to anyone authorized to view it who ultimately disseminates it to unauthorized people — and it’s online for everyone to see.
Duffy knew she came across something that should not be online and tried reaching out to the federal government informing them of this. Nothing happened.
“I immediately sent an email through the White House web site that these documents are on the web for all to see. I got no response. I also called the White House yesterday and spoke to a volunteer (and said) these restricted documents are on web. I have heard from no one. I also sent it to a friend who works at the Department of Defense and said, ‘Get this taken down.’ It’s still up there.”

Expanded Medicaid’s fine print holds surprise: ‘payback’ from estate after death!

The Seattle Times ^ | 12-15-13 | Carol Ostrom

As thousands of state residents enroll in Washington’s expanded Medicaid program, many will be surprised at fine print: After you’re dead, your estate can be billed for ordinary health-care expenses. State officials are scrambling to change the rule.

It wasn’t the moonlight, holiday-season euphoria or family pressure that made Sofia Prins and Gary Balhorn, both 62, suddenly decide to get married.
It was the fine print.
As fine print is wont to do, it had buried itself in a long form — Balhorn’s application for free health insurance through the expanded state Medicaid program. As the paperwork lay on the dining-room table in Port Townsend, Prins began reading.
She was shocked: If you’re 55 or over, Medicaid can come back after you’re dead and bill your estate for ordinary health-care expenses.
The way Prins saw it, that meant health insurance via Medicaid is hardly “free” for Washington residents 55 or older. It’s a loan, one whose payback requirements aren’t well advertised. And it penalizes people who, despite having a low income, have managed to keep a home or some savings they hope to pass to heirs, Prins said.
With an estimated 223,000 adults seeking health insurance headed toward Washington’s expanded Medicaid program over the next three years, the state’s estate-recovery rules, which allow collection of nearly all medical expenses, have come under fire.
Medicaid, in keeping with federal policy, has long tapped into estates. But because most low-income adults without disabilities could not qualify for typical medical coverage through Medicaid, recovery primarily involved expenses for nursing homes and other long-term care.

GM Asked to Pay Back $10 Billion Bailout Costs

NLPC ^ | December 16, 2013 | Staff

pile of cash
Peter Flaherty, president of the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC), today posed key questions to the General Motors leadership at a National Press Club press conference, including whether the company will repay to taxpayers the $10 billion direct cost of the GM bailout.
News that the U.S. Treasury Department has sold its remaining stake and that Mary Barra will take over as GM's new CEO have put the spotlight on the company and its future. GM executives have pointed to GM's $26.8 billion in cash as evidence of its improved financial position. Analysts have raised the possibility that the company will buy back shares or institute a dividend.
Questions for GM:
1) Will GM compensate taxpayers for the $10 billion loss they have taken on their involuntary "investment" in the company?
2) If not, why should taxpayers take a loss now on their GM "investment" when the company allegedly has such a strong cash position?
3) Because of a novel application in bankruptcy of the tax-loss carryforward provisions of the tax code, $30-$40 billion in GM profits are shielded from taxation. Should a profitable GM pay taxes? When do you estimate GM will pay taxes?
4) Do you think the $10 billion loss represents the full cost to taxpayers of GM's bailout in light of the bailouts of former GM companies like GMAC/Ally Financial and Delphi, not to mention the separate bailout of automotive suppliers?
5) If not repaid, do you think the taxpayer loss on its "investment" in GM will create a negative reaction among consumers, similar to the reaction to the bailout itself and the years-long government ownership?
6) The United Autoworkers (UAW) and its affiliates are now GM's largest shareholders. How can you negotiate with the UAW when it is both your workforce and your employer? Do you believe that the UAW should also sell its stake?
7) Bloomberg recently quoted former Automotive Task member Harry Wilson as saying GM's cash "hoard" might make it a target for activist investors. If so, such investors are likely to make demands such as reducing the workforce that will be opposed by the UAW. How will you be able to serve two masters?
8) With GM's pension obligation easily exceeding its market capitalization, some $71 billion at of the end of 2011, does GM face a long-term competitive challenge if it can't coax further concessions by the UAW? Are any concessions likely to be forthcoming?
9) To what extent was the Treasury's sale of GM equity coordinated with your company? Was it announced to coincide with Dan Akerson's speech today?
10) Where will GM's employment grow the most in the next five years? What percent of GM's new employees in that period do you estimate are likely to be UAW represented?
11) To what extent and how soon will the government's exit affect compensation for GM management including yourself?
12) By any metric, the Chevy Volt has been costly failure. It has been kept alive presumably to help President Obama reach his goal of putting one million electric vehicles on the road. Now that government control has been removed from GM, will you kill the Volt?
NLPC has been a persistent critic of the auto bailout during both the Bush and Obama administrations. NLPC Associate Fellow Mark Modica, a frequent guest on television and radio shows, blogs regularly on the bailout and related issues. NLPC published an October 2013 survey titled " Auto Bailout is Drag on GM Truck Sales ," which verified that disapproval of the auto bailout is hurting GM pickup truck sales.

What will it take?

Americans still seem willing to give a pass to the disaster in the White House.

Let me begin with a categorical statement that, given current events and recent political history, can be easily defended: Barack Hussein Obama is a willful, indoctrinated child of the Left with strong Islamic sympathies who is not fit to govern. Indeed, he would not be fit to govern Lower Slobovia, let alone the United States of America. Obama is a historic disaster of the first magnitude and, if not restrained, he will see to the irrevocable decline of the country which foolishly elected him, leaving the world on the brink of a conflict — or in the midst of one — whose repercussions cannot be underestimated.
Accompanying the undeniable havoc and damage that Obama is wreaking on his country and equally on its allies — Honduras, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Poland, Czech Republic, Israel, and possibly Taiwan — is the sense of helplessness that overcomes one when writing or speaking about a rogue president and his destructive administration. I feel this personally, having done my utmost in books, articles and lectures, from 2008 to the present, to warn whomever might read or listen that Obama represented a greater threat to the U.S. and the oddly named “free world” than any of our most dedicated and belligerent enemies. Even prior to his nomination as the Democratic candidate for the presidency, my distrust of this man was proprioceptive. And after his Missouri address, I wondered why anyone would want to “fundamentally transform” a country which, for all its flaws, perched atop the pinnacle of success in comparison to any other country.
Everything Obama has done since then has only served to confirm what was originally a deep suspicion and soon grew to become a complete certainty. Dozens of meticulously researched books have been published to the same effect. And yet very few people seemed to be paying attention. No less disconcerting, those who argue that to criticize Obama is a sign of deep-dyed racism are, of course, relying on slander and misappropriation of language to protect their chosen standard bearer and his Marxist/progressivist/utopian project.
What will it take to convince the ersatz aristocracy of frivolous intellectuals and brainless celebrities, partisan journalists, editors and academics, and an indifferent or deluded laity that they are heading for a crisis that will change our lives immeasurably for the worse? The evidence is beyond dispute.
America is drowning in a state of unredeemable debt — $17 trillion in actual debt and, according to economic historian Niall Ferguson, in the vicinity of $200 trillion in unfunded liabilities, while one in five households depends on food stamps. At the same time, it is printing money like there’s no tomorrow — and there may not be — while subsidizing green energy fiascos at enormous cost to the taxpayer ($90 billion in wasted stimulus funds, and counting). It finds itself in the throes of a metastasizing race war, caused in no small degree by the president’s rhetoric and behavior and fomented by his attorney general. It is a country increasingly governed by executive fiat and by an administration rocked by a near-endless gyre of political and ideological scandals. It is a country whose federal government opposes voter ID, opening the door to electoral corruption. It is a country that spies on its own citizens, software corporations and web search engines, tries avowed terrorists in civilian courts, allows its ambassador and his entourage to be killed, without reprisal, and suffers its higher echelons to be riddled with Muslim Brotherhood operatives, giving the impression of a College of mujtahids. They are the advance cohort. “Today,” writes Larry Kelley in his sobering book Lessons from Fallen Civilizations, “millions of militant Muslims awake every morning plotting the destruction of the US. Many are among us.” And there will be more, if these reports of fast-tracking the citizenship applications of large numbers of Muslim immigrants are reliable, as they appear to be.
It is a country whose president purges its military — 197 senior officers, including nine commanding generals — as did Turkey’s autocratic leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan to ensure the continuity of his regime. It is a country that refuses to defend its borders, even suing to keep them as porous as possible. It is a country shifting precipitously to the Left, now mired in the exorbitant socialist travesty of Obamacare built on an ascending pyramid of lies and false enrollment numbers — or in the words of L.A. County Deputy District Attorney Patrick Frey at his Patterico blog, “they’re not just lying about politics now. They’re lying about data. They’re lying about everything. All the time. Constantly. It’s what you have to do to prop up an unsustainable government. … You lie and lie and lie and lie and lie and lie and lie.”
It is a country whose domestic agenda is predicated on the Marxist principle of redistributive economics that amounts to stealing from the productive class to maintain an ever-growing parasitical constituency. It is a country at war with honest science, transmuting NASA into a program for Muslim outreach and buying into the Gore/Hansen/Mann-inflated, IPCC climate scam. It is a country that is retreating on every front and that has lost the Middle East as well as the respect of its adversaries. It is a country that betrays its allies and endangers the world in the process, as in the phony, eagerly sought agreement that allows a self-described genocidal and nuclearizing Iran to keep spinning its centrifuges while profiting from relaxed sanctions. It is a country whose administration has sold its loyal partner, Israel, down the Jordan River.
“The United States is no longer a rational nation,” mourns James Lewis. “Under Obama we are burning our traditional allies, and since weakness brings aggression, Iran is now empowered, China is grabbing ocean territory for shale deposits, and the worst offenders against women’s rights are now elected to the UN Human Rights Commission.” It is hard to contend with his summation.
All this proceeds under the direction of a president who has sealed his vital documents so that very little of crucial importance is known about him. Roger Simon notes, as many others have done, “that Obama’s academic records are perpetually unavailable for a reason — and that reason is most likely that they reveal he received financial preferences, scholarships and/or loans, as a foreign student.” I have been arguing this thesis, and more, for several years about a president who is essentially a cipher. Intentional lack of evidence comprises evidence of its own that something is amiss. Further, if Obama was a foreign student, it follows that his presidential legitimacy is in question. But Simon is forgiving here, averring that he “would vote in a heartbeat for a foreign born person if I thought he or she were the best candidate, assuming it was all legal and public.…” Pace Simon, considering Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5 of the United States Constitution, how such a process could be legal is distinctly moot.
Indeed, all other reasons aside, to have conferred immense power on a public figure with so meager a track record and so thin and discontinuous a résumé defies even the most rudimentary logic. Who is this man who sits in the Oval Office? (As PJM commenter “cfbleachers” correctly remarks in response to a previous article of mine, “Obama has spent his entire life perfecting the art of the mask.”) And what is his modus operandi? “Obama,” writes Dinesh D’Souza in Obama’s America: Unmaking the American Dream, published just prior to the 2012 election, “is possessed of a certain low cunning that makes him politically formidable. Obama’s skill…is to figure out what the American people want to see and hear, and then give it to them, while doing something entirely different.” By 2012 Obama’s lack of a paper trail, his craftiness and his penchant for deceit should have been blatantly obvious to any sensible and mature American voter, irrespective of class, race or gender.
TV personality Monica Crowley concurs. In a recent speech, she spelled out what should have been plain for all to see: “We have a president who…came out of the swamps of Chicago machine politics, who learned at the knee of the communist revolutionary Frank Marshall Davis, who studied under Marxist professors…who trained intensively in the revolutionary tactics of Saul Alinsky, who launched his political career in the living room of Marxist revolutionaries and domestic terrorists… who for two decades sat in the pews of the radical anti-American preacher, who tried desperately to bury that past, who spoke about the fundamental transformation of the nation…who waged war on entire news organizations, Fox News, and who spent his first term slamming into place radical wealth redistribution and socialized medicine….What I’m describing here is the classic tin-pot dictatorship. We never thought it could happen here, and yet, here it is….Those of us in this room knew what was going on from the beginning before he was even elected president, but now it’s starting to dawn on more and more people what is really happening here.” She is right. Even for those who were not “in this room,” there should have been little doubt that Obama was a man without a discernible moral core, inspired by an anti-American political philosophy and utterly devoid of presidential heft.
But American voters were ready to be taken in by a smooth-talking, shape-changing, confidence-man, like the gullible “marks” in Melville’s last novel about the exploits of an adroit charlatan, and to trust the image rather than the substance (or absence of same). This is another way of saying that America elected the results of Obama’s wholly predictable dogmatic fecklessness. America elected not to be America anymore, to fundamentally transform itself from a solvent, powerful, feared and respected nation into a quasi-European basket case. America surrendered to reparation chromatics, as if seeking absolution for a history that no one today is responsible for and that Obama himself never experienced. Admittedly, Obama’s approval ratings have plunged of late, but public opinion is notoriously volatile and will probably rebound at some point. Liberal dogma and white guilt will see to that. One can only hope it will assume the form of a dead cat bounce.
The question remains. What will it take to awaken the tranquilized sector of the public and shake the elite corps of complacent opinion-makers out of their blind and factional torpor? How long before reality pre-empts fantasy? “The last five years of the Obama administration,” writes Russian émigré Alexander Markovsky, “have been like living on a volcano.” How long before the lava starts to flow?
One must hope that America will come to its collective senses before it is too late. But I am afraid that it will take nothing less than a major catastrophe, a fiscal implosion that takes the “food” out of food stamps, coupled with more high-casualty terrorist attacks both abroad and on its own soil, leading to the eruption of civil unrest and the possible impeachment of the most destructive president in the entire pageant of American history — a sorcerer’s apprentice in a house on fire or a Machiavellian schemer following a carefully contrived plan — before America emerges from its devastating slumber. Assuming, of course, that it ever does, or that a path to recovery will still be possible. For nothing is guaranteed in a nation so divided as America is today.

Our Bored President

The American Thinker ^ | 12-16-13 | Ed Lasky

Valerie Jarrett, Obama's Rasputin, unwittingly provided us an answer to the question of why the Obama Presidency is such a man-caused disaster.
There are few people who are close to the notoriously insular Barack Obama (a former aide, Neera Tanden, said that "Obama doesn't call anyone, and he's not close to almost anyone. It's stunning that he's in politics, because he really doesn't like people") but Valerie Jarrett is among the select few. They have been friends for decades; she introduced Barack to Michelle; she is a constant presence in the White House, and highly unusual for a White House aide, enjoys her own Secret Service protective detail. And when she described Barack Obama as having been "bored to death his whole life" she helped explained what lies behind a failed presidency.
People familiar with Barack Obama's history realize he has a very low threshold for boredom. This is a trait shared by many millennials: they bore easily, and that character flaw is one reason employers refrain from hiring them. Yet they feel entitled to promotions as a way for others to display gratitude towards them and to give them an ego booster shot. They want to be stimulated and entertained all the time and find work tedious and...boring.
Obama's boredom began early.
When interviewed upon becoming the first black Harvard Law Review President he told the Associated Press, "I'm not interested in the suburbs. The suburbs bore me"; by inference, suburbanites bore him, as well -- and we know how he feels about small-town Americans). Ah...to be jaded and judgmental so early in life and to feel free to spout stereotypes.
