IRS, Benghazi, AP: The Problems Pile Up for Obama!

realclearpolitics.com ^ | 5/14/13 | Alexis Simendinger

Sometimes when it rains on second-term presidents, they need more than an umbrella.
President Obama tried Monday to dismiss as “political games” persistent questions about how the White House handled last year’s attacks in Benghazi, Libya, while at the same time a new uproar about IRS scrutiny of conservative advocacy organizations ignited on Capitol Hill. Obama said if IRS agents willfully exercised political bias, responsible personnel must be “held accountable.”
As he was speaking, the reactions of House and Senate lawmakers suggested Obama did little to tamp down the Benghazi controversies, which have persisted since extremists killed four Americans there in September. Nor did he temper the bipartisan outrage following Friday’s news of an IRS inspector general draft report citing the agency’s mishandling of conservative groups that applied for tax-exempt status, dating back to March 2010.

Chiefs at IRS Knew of Targeting!

Wall Street Journal ^ | May 13, 2013 | JOHN D. MCKINNON

President Barack Obama said Monday those responsible for any improper scrutiny of conservative groups' tax status would be held "fully accountable," hours before it emerged that the current and former heads of the Internal Revenue Service were informed last May that tea-party groups had been targeted. ...
Separately, investigators told congressional staffers Monday that Mr. Miller's predecessor, Commissioner Douglas Shulman, who was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2008, was informed of the problems in May 2012, according to an aide. But Republicans say Mr. Shulman—who had previously testified that there was no IRS targeting—never told them of what he subsequently learned. Mr. Shulman couldn't be reached for comment Monday. ...

Obama knee-deep in Nixon-esque scandal!

Boston Herald ^ | May 13, 2013 | Joe Battenfield

President Obama’s second-term campaign slogan was “Forward,” but instead we’ve got cover-ups, congressional investigations and the government persecution of political opponents and reporters.
That sounds like “backward” to me. All the way to, say, 1972.
Who would have guessed that just a few months into his second term, President Obama would be compared to Tricky Dick. And by a liberal Massachusetts Democrat — U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano.
Republicans could not even have scripted this one. The agency most hated by voters, the Internal Revenue Service, admits to going on a Nixonian witch hunt against Tea Party and conservative groups during the re-election campaign.
This is a story even the most partisan Massachusetts liberal cannot defend. It’s so bad that even Ed Markey is calling for heads to roll.
Now we learn that the Justice Department has secretly obtained the phone records of Associated Press reporters and editors in what appears to be an investigation of an AP story that disclosed details of a CIA operation that stopped a terrorist attack.
Going after the Tea Party is one thing, but the media? What an outrage. Who knows, the press may get so mad they won’t laugh at Obama’s jokes during the next White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Scandals, cover-ups, IRS intimidation, spying on the press -- Obama goes all Nixonian on us!

Sipsey Street Irregulars.blogspot ^ | May 14, 2013

"Certain elements may try to stretch the Watergate burglary beyond what it is." – Nixon Press Secretary Ron Ziegler, 1972, referring to Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward.

Gov't obtains wide AP phone records in probe "The president is aware of what is going on in Southeast Asia. That is not to say that there is anything going on in Southeast Asia." – Ron Ziegler, 1971.

Meanwhile, Jay Carney continues to morph into Baghdad Bob with stories like this appearing in the previously reliable Pravda-on-the-Potomac: "IRS officials in Washington were involved in targeting of conservative groups." Ooopsie! Carney needs to study up on Ron Ziegler.

"This is the operative statement. The others are inoperative." -- Either Ron Ziegler in April 1973 or Jay Carney next week, or, more likely, both.

Like the IRS Scandal? You'll Love ObamaCare!

The American Thinker ^ | 5/14/2013 | Jeffrey T. Brown

So, we have learned that the IRS orchestrated systematic prejudice against Americans whose political views this administration's mobsters found distasteful. It order to decide upon whom to bestow what the law fully permits certain entities, regardless of their politics, some clever Brownshirts working for the most coercive governmental agency there is, decided that before these Americans would be denied their legal rights, they'd be made to dance for the enjoyment of liberal/progressive/Socialist bureaucrats. What sport!
Equal treatment under the law has been made secondary to overt political intimidation by these fine administrators. No news here. Our Department of Justice is apparently nothing more than a field office of the ACLU, picking and choosing those to whom equality under the law will be awarded, based on the same sorts of characteristics that inform all our other governmental discrimination. One must meet the qualifications, after all. Wrong skin color? Sorry, no equality for you. Wrong gender? Too bad. Wrong religion? Oops. Obviously, it was only a matter of time before belief in the fundamental principles of our entire system of government, as written, would land you squarely on the wrong side of the equality scale.
You want to enjoy a legal status to which you are entitled? Sure, but first, you must rat out the friends, family and associates whom we have decided are "undesirable". You see, we don't like their views. They believe in freedom of speech and association. They believe in privacy. They believe in the Constitution. They believe in the real God, not the ones we have elected.
These are just the sort of Americans we don't need. You understand, right? ...

Obama finds his legacy!

The Washington Times ^ | 5/14/2013 | Wesley Pruden

Barack Obama can relax and get to work on his hook shot and his putting. The presidential legacy he has fretted over is now clear, well established, safe and secure. The presidential historians can fire up their laptops and let the processing of words begin.
It’s too early to conclude, as some Republicans have, that the dam has broken, that the sleeping mainstream media has begun to come out of its sleeping-sickness stupor, and that even Democrats are about to leap out of the way. Not yet. But the dam has clearly sprung a leak.
Benghazi is no longer “the b-word,” to be relegated to furtive whispers behind the potted plant, spoken like the f-bomb and the n-word, the ugly burps in the language of the uncivilized and the indecent. “For a long time,” concedes Alex Koppelman in the New Yorker, “it seemed like the idea of a cover-up was just a Republican obsession. But now there is something to it.”
And it’s not just Benghazi. The scandal at the Internal Revenue System frightens everyone, given that an IRS audit and a heart attack are the twin terrors of the wee hours of the night. “Previous presidents,” writes Joe Klein in Time magazine, “including great ones like Roosevelt, have used the IRS against their enemies. But I don’t think Obama ever wanted to be on the same page as Richard Nixon. In this specific case, he now is.”
