Politics makes strange bedfellows, the cliche goes. In 2008, Hillary Clinton waged a protracted and sometimes bitter battle for the Democratic presidential nomination against a former community organizer and absentee state senator from Illinois only to wind up as President Obama's secretary of state.

Obama, who rails against alleged Republican intransigence as the root of all his problems, needs all the help he can get from the man who got re-elected by working with Republicans, led by then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich, producing balanced budgets and a pay-down of the national debt in the process.
